Transforming Learning for a Third Century

In 2012, the Office of the Provost launched the Transforming Learning for a Third Century (TLTC) Initiative — a five-year project with an ambitious agenda to define and cultivate a culture of engaged learning at the University of Michigan.

The TLTC initiative provided $20.5 million in funding to support innovative projects, faculty development, and assessment and evaluation. 128 projects representing 352 faculty and staff members from all schools and colleges across campus were included. More than 10,000 students were directly involved in one or more of these funded projects.

As part of the TLTC initiative, a team from the Office of the Provost and the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching conducted an evaluation to better understand the influences of these projects as well as any shifts in institutional culture that may have resulted from the robust investment. Their 2018 report — Engaged Learning at Michigan: Understanding the Impact of the Transforming Learning for a Third Century Initiative — shares their findings, an overview of funded TLTC projects, and key considerations for undertaking similar large-scale initiatives in the future.
